GLENCOE – Steppenwolf Theatre Co. shared the sad news that Martha Lavey, ensemble member and former Steppenwolf Artistic Director, passed away on April 25 due to complications from a stroke suffered on Wednesday, April 19. This stroke was in addition to the debilitating stroke she suffered in May of 2015, and from which she had been struggling to recover. As faithful friends, audience members, donors, staff, artists, mentees and members of the Steppenwolf community, we were all indelibly impacted by Martha’s passion, commitment, vision and unmatched intellect. Martha cared deeply for each and every one of us-no matter our relationship to her or the theatre. She will be dearly missed.

Services for Martha will be held near her parent’s home in Vienna, Virginia at St Mark Catholic Church. A memorial to celebrate her life and her impact on Steppenwolf and the Chicago community will be held at Steppenwolf, with a date and time to be determined.

Audrey Nixon

LAKE COUNTY – It is with a heavy heart that Lake County announces the passing of a cherished friend, passionate and dedicated community leader and devoted mother and grandmother, Audrey H. Nixon.

Audrey was found in her North Chicago home the morning of Thursday, April 27. Audrey was 81 years old.

Audrey was the longest-serving Lake County Board member (District 14), beginning her service in 1982. She was a resident of North Chicago and also represented portions of Park City, Waukegan, and Gurnee. During her tenure, she served on dozens of committees, including serving as the long-time distinguished Chair of the County Board’s Law and Judicial Committee.

Audrey’s commitment to her church and community ran deep. She was a member of Christian Valley Missionary Baptist Church in North Chicago under the leadership of Senior Pastor Henry Woods.

The Lake County Board and the entire Lake County family send their deepest condolences to family, friends, her church, and community members who gave Audrey endless love and support. She will be remembered forever in their hearts.

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said, “Audrey was a kind, diligent and gracious leader for over three decades on the Lake County Board. She cared deeply for her district and especially North Chicago. She carried herself with a level of grace and dignity of a time gone by. But make no mistake, if you crossed North Chicago or got on the wrong side of her on a civil justice issue, she would make no bones about it.”

He added, “Audrey led with one key mantra – she wanted people to work together and she would remind you of that just about every chance she could, whether you were a legislator, judge, colleague, staff member or constituent. At a tense meeting or during a debate on a divisive issue, she would say something like ‘I understand all this, but we have got to work together.’ And, it wasn’t just what she said, but how she said it – in the same way the matriarch of a family can gracefully and forcefully refocus a conversation, Audrey did that for us. She was our matriarch and we were her colleagues and second family.”

Audrey truly cared about people and she made it her life purpose to help them. She focused on initiatives that could transform lives for the better, especially in young people. For example, she was very passionate about the Youth Build that provides at-risk young adults with the education and training necessary to become gainfully employed and build a better future. She was a tireless advocate for programs that promote and advance diversity and inclusion.

She will be remembered for her quiet strength, wisdom, fearless persistence and sense of optimism, which made her an exceptional leader.

“Lake County lost a true champion for justice today,” said Chief Judge Jorge L. Ortiz of the 19th Judicial Circuit. “Audrey Nixon served not only Lake County Board District 14, but all of Lake County as a passionate advocate for fairness, equality, as well as civility in our public discourse. She was a staunch supporter of our court, and, especially, our Veteran’s, Mental Health and Drug Specialty Courts. Mrs. Nixon regularly implored the county’s justice partners to work together in the best interest of the people of Lake County. There is no better way to honor her memory than to heed her call. On behalf of the entire 19th Judicial Circuit, I extend my deepest condolences to Audrey’s family. She will be greatly missed, and never forgotten by Lake County’s judges.”

During all of her tenure on the Lake County Board, Audrey served on the Law and Judicial Committee for the Board, much of it as its Chair, and in that capacity worked closely with Lake County’s judges. She was an active member of many organizations, and was known for her cordial manner and mediatory style.

Former Wilmette resident and noted advertising industry executive Chris Wall died May 9 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago after a short battle with cancer. He was 61.

A graduate of New Trier East’s class of 1974, Wall was the starting Center of the school’s famed 1972-73 basketball team. Coached by John Schneiter, it remains the most successful boy’s varsity team in the school’s 116-year history, and reached the final game of the Illinois High School Basketball Tournament.

Upon graduation, Wall’s extraordinary high school career led to a full, four year scholarship at Northwestern, where he played under coach Tex Winter. In 1980, after a move to Los Angeles, Wall entered the advertising field as a copywriter for the Broadway Department Stores.

In 1987, he was hired by BBDO Los Angeles, and helped craft award-winning advertising campaigns such as “What’s on Your Powerbook” for Apple. In the 1990s, Wall moved to Ogilvy and Mather, New York, when he served as Chief Creative Officer, leading creation of IBM’s worldwide advertising for 15 years.

Steve Hayden, retired Vice Chairman of Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide, and Wall’s long-term mentor and friend noted that, under Wall’s leadership, IBM’s brand value moved from #283 in to #3. Wall also created advertising campaigns for for UPS, Motorola, Kodak, Computer Discount Warehouse and, more recently, Cisco Systems.

Mr. Hayden recently pointed out that, at 6 feet 10 and a half inches tall, Wall was actually a giant. “That wonderful combination of high-intelligence, sound logic, a touch of human goofiness is captured best in the line Chris used to use, ironically, as always, ‘Life is short. I am not.’”

A memorial service was held for Chris Wall at Ogilvy and Mather’s Chicago office on May 19th, where a theater will be dedicated in his name.

Tincher Remembered as ‘Mr. Lake Bluff’

Tom Tincher was instrumental in bringing home the Lake Bluff Ice Truck after it was donated to the village by Tom and Melody Wisdom.

LAKE BLUFF — Anytime something was needed in Lake Bluff, Thomas A. Tincher was there for his friends, his village and his country.

Whether serving in local government, leading the Lake Bluff History Museum, organizing holiday observations for Lake Bluff American Legion Post 510, getting an online certificate to officiate at the wedding of a friend’s daughter or spying for his country, Tincher was there.

“There wasn’t another guy who was more of a Mr. Lake Bluff,” said Village President Kathy O’Hara. “He was so important in so many things.”

“He was the heart and soul of many of the town’s organizations, including the museum,” said Catherine McKechney, the current museum president who succeeded Tincher.

Tincher, 84, died June 18 leaving five adult children, four grandchildren along his wife of 63 years, Ethel Tincher.

“They were a team in every sense of the word,” said McKechney.

McKechney said the Tinchers teamwork extended to using his wife and first child, then a baby, as props when he was stationed in Korea as a special duty CIC field officer in the United States Army.

“He would take a picture of Ethel (Tincher) and the baby with (government) buildings in the background,” said McKechney. “He was a spy.”

Tincher Organized Civic Events

Though McKechney said Tincher rarely talked about himself or his exploits, he organized the village’s observances for Memorial Day and Veterans Day, demonstrating his loyalty to both veterans and his community.

Stuart Karno, the adjutant of the local American Legion post, used one word to describe what Tincher did for the organization: “Everything,” said Karno. “He was the one who made sure everything got done for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He wrote the script for the ceremony. He was the glue that made everything stick together.”

Karno said Tincher’s willingness to make sure things worked to perfection went to their personal friendship as well. When it was time for his daughter to wed, Karno said she wanted Tincher to perform the ceremony.

“He’s not a minister but he got one of those online certificates and he officiated at her wedding,” said Karno. “I’m going to miss him every day of my life.”

As a member of the museum board and its past president, Tincher played a key role in the restoration of a 1920s truck once used to deliver ice to village homes. Thanks to the successful effort, the truck from the Lake Bluff Ice Co. is seen in the village’s Fourth of July parade and other official events, according to an August 9, 2009, DailyNorthShore.com story.

When the museum learned about the ice truck and the willingness of its then current owner to donate it to the museum,  Tincher drove to the warehouse where it was stored to take a look.

“It was not in good shape,” McKechney said. “There was a lot of work to do. Tom (Tincher) decided to take it on faith and somehow the faith was rewarded. Tom Tincher was a huge part of that.”

Tincher Served as Village Clerk, Trustee

Tincher was the Lake Bluff village clerk from 1987 to 1990 and spent two terms as a member of the Village Board of Trustees between 1990 and 1999. As a trustee, he chaired the Public Safety Committee and was always quick to volunteer to help with a project.

“He was really an invaluable part of our community,” said O’Hara.

Along with all his time volunteering for the village, Tincher spent more than 40 years working in the classified advertising and marketing departments of the Chicago Tribune, according to information from Wenban Funeral Home.

The ice truck played a role when Tincher became only the second person to win Lake Bluff’s Phyllis Albrecht Award for Distinguished Community Service. O’Hara said the award was established in 2014 to honor Albrecht, the village’s first woman president and trustee. It was given to Tincher June 13, 2016.

“They picked him up in the ice truck and brought him to the ceremony,” said McKechney.

After attending Shattuck School in Faribault, Minn., and Northwestern University, Tincher eventually moved to Lake Bluff in 1973. In addition to his wife Ethel, Tincher is survived by his children Mike (Jo), Cliff (Kelly), Tom, Holly (Todd) and Sid (Heide). He is also survived by grandchildren Lila, Hanna, Slaid and Shane as well as a sister, Jenny Cleaves.

Services were held June 23 at the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest.
